da Vinci Robotic Surgery - Colorectal Surgery

The da Vinci System is a state-of-the-art surgical platform with 3D, high-definition vision and patented surgical instruments that takes surgery beyond the limits of the human hand. By overcoming the challenges of traditional open and laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci is changing the experience of surgery for people around the world.

Our group can use the da Vinci Robot for colon resections, rectal resections, and rectopexies. We also use it to remove tumors from the rectum though the anus without having to make any incisions on the abdomen. Dr. Manchio and Dr. Browning were the first to offer the use of the robot for this purpose, called robotic TAMIS, in the entire State of Oregon and within 100 miles of Portland. Dr. Manchio was recently interviewed by FOX 12 Oregon about his expertise in Robotic TAMIS. Click here to watch the interview.

While both laparoscopic and robotic surgery have been well demonstrated to have numerous benefits compared with traditional open surgery, use of the DaVinici surgical robot has been shown to impart the greatest magnitude of benefit even when compared directly to its laparoscopic minimally invasive counterpart. In one study across the entire Providence Health System, “Outcome comparisons between high-volume robotic and laparoscopic surgeons in a large healthcare system” (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28408112/), findings demonstrated shorter hospital stay and lower chance of needing to convert to open surgery when the operation was performed robotically compared to laparoscopically.

In another study using the same Providence Health System data, high-volume robotic surgeons were found to have yet further improvement in their patient outcomes when compared to their low-volume robotic surgical colleagues. In the study “Higher robotic colorectal surgery volume improves outcomes”

(https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29458970/), both Dr. Browning and Dr. Manchio are among the eight high-volume robotic surgeons mentioned.

Dr. Browning and Dr. Manchio are credentialed and experienced in the use of the da Vinci System for the treatment of many colorectal conditions.

CSATS is a national performance management system for evaluating techniques in robotic surgery.  Drs. Browning and Manchio are on top of the national leaderboards for Right colectomy and Low Anterior Resection.  The rankings are crowd sourced and based on expert reviewer scores of their robotic surgical technique.
