Surgery for Inflammatory Bowel Disease-Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, with Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) being its two main types of IBD. While the exact cause of IBD remains unknown, and there is no cure for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis can often be cured with surgery.

Most patients with IBD are initially treated with medications prescribed by their gastroenterologist. However, surgery is often necessary when the disease progresses or complications arise.
