Hemorrhoid Treatment

Hemorrhoid Treatment in Portland, OR

At our clinic, we offer both invasive and non-invasive hemorrhoid treatments tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient.

Internal hemorrhoid tissues have minimal sensation, allowing for relatively painless office-based procedures such as rubber band ligation and infrared coagulation therapy.

Infrared Coagulation Therapy

Infrared coagulation (also known as infrared photocoagulation) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure designed to treat internal hemorrhoids. During the treatment, our physicians use a specialized device that emits an intense beam of infrared light. This light generates heat, forming scar tissue that cuts off blood flow to the hemorrhoids. Without a blood supply, the hemorrhoidal tissue shrinks and eventually withers away. This technique is particularly effective for treating multiple small internal hemorrhoids

Rubber Band Ligation

Rubber band ligation is a time-tested, simple, and effective treatment for internal hemorrhoids. In this procedure, excess hemorrhoidal tissue is gently drawn into a device that places a small rubber band at its base. The band restricts blood f low to the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrink and eventually detach within a few days. Once the tissue is gone, the rubber band naturally dislodges and passes with bowel movements.

This method reduces hemorrhoid bulk, prevents bleeding, and secures the hemorrhoidal tissue within the anal canal to avoid prolapse. Because the anal canal contains three primary hemorrhoid bundles, treatments are typically performed one bundle at a time to minimize discomfort. Most patients require one to three sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, for complete symptom relief. Rubber band ligation is highly effective for all but the smallest or largest prolapsing hemorrhoids.
